About Nicholas

My design process is a three-step mantra: Listen. Define. Design. This underpins my UX approach — whether crafting simplistic user experiences, devising modular, productivity-enhancing systems for my team, or fostering collaborative cultures... I approach all challenges with an open mind based on an array of expertise. I genuinely love people & working collaboratively to improve their lives!

My UX story

I was fortunate to attend a high school teaching HTML in 1997 — sparking my interest in the web, design, and development. From here, I've continued to expand my coding knowledge learning CSS, JavaScript, PHP, Python, React, and C+.

Coding has been my design super power — thinking about complex problems from various perspectives, understanding the development process, and considering modular, simple, and efficient solutions.

In 2012, I obtained a position in manufacturing. This experience allowed me to learn about Kaizen, lean processes, marrying business with customer goals, and the fundamentals of collaborative team work. Writing systems and other technical documentation in this role, provided the life chnging pivot into UX.

Since graduating from Kent State University with a B.S. in Digital Science in 2018, emphasizing web development and interaction design, I've worked with some incredible teams at UPMC Health Plan, ADT, and Ibotta. I've also collaborated closely and learned a lot from the team at Google, especially about design systems.

How I spend free time

In my free time, I'm a maestro... jamming on drums and guitar. I've been a member of several touring bands, recorded with legendary producer Steve Albini (Nirvana, The Pixies, PJ Harvey), and attended a SXSW festival or two in Austin, TX.

I love unleashing my creativity in other ways too! Especially through a green thumb — crafting landscapes and nurturing bonsai by volunteering at my local botanical garden.

I can also be found with my girlfriend, Caitlin — We're definitely museum, film, foodie, and trivia buffs.

I enjoy being nose-deep in design books (especially Brad Frost's 'Atomic Design') and honing my design and coding skills. Always hungry for knowledge and thrills!
